How Important is your skin?

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It not only serves as a barrier for germs and pathogens, but it helps to regulate temperature and provides sensation.  The skin actually has over five million nerve endings! 

As we age though, skin changes become more and more apparent.  It becomes thinner and less elastic.  Fat goes away, which can make veins and bones more visible.   Cells that contain pigment (called melanocytes) can decrease, which makes skin appear to be more translucent and pale.  Oil glands become less productive, and skin may sag, develop age spots or wrinkle.

In addition to appearance issues, skin becomes more vulnerable to injury as well.  Scratches and cuts may take longer to heal, and skin tears can happen as well.

It’s not easy to take care of your skin, but it is important to do so for both health and beauty. When you take care of your body as a whole, your skin benefits.  Therefore, one of the primary defenses against aging is proper nutrition and rest.  Adding in specific routines like cleaning your face thoroughly using a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils can help, as can following that with a toner to balance the skin’s pH and a moisturizer to hydrate. Sleep is a vital part of any wellness routine though, so that your body can repair itself.
